"vancouver!! it's so good to be home"
The last time I saw Marianas Trench play the jeans were low and skinny, the songs were belted out by a crowd of teenagers. It was November 2009 and I myself was a teenager; shooting her very first concert. The show was at the Vogue, and my mom came with me to make sure everything was on the “up and up”. It was. (A quick shoutout to my former editor Shawn Conner).
Fifteen years the kids (and myself) are all grown up in their high waisted straight legged jeans (though skinny jeans are my “hill”), giving just as much as their past selves.
As for Marianas Trench? They still got it.
From the very time the band took the stage, and singer Josh Ramsay sang the first note the crowd was with him and the band the whole way, save for a small lull about 45 minutes in, but that didn’t last long. It was one of, if not the most energetic crowd I’ve been in the room with. It was something else. I came for Marianas Trench, but I stayed for the fans.
While I wasn’t at the Taylor Swift show that just graced the city, I think I’d put my money on an Orpheum filled with Marianas Trench fans over a BC Place filled with Swifties, to break the decibel and enthusiasm metre. I wouldn’t be surprised if most lost their voices before the end of the night.
"So this next song is very serious..."
"I've been hogging the spotlight all these years, when this prime cut of beef to my left has been ready for a solo, for years and years."
Not to take away from the band themselves, who put on a hell of a show that those in attendance are not likely to forget anytime soon, if not ever. Led by singer Ramsay who had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. His charisma and showmanship taking centre stage. Though it wasn’t until end of the fifth song that he interacted with the crowd, and after that it was regular check ins, where his personality shined just as bright. This was the only time that the crowd was quiet. With the occasional affirmation shouted towards the stage.
It wasn’t just Ramsay who held the spotlight. Bassist Mike Ayley, got the full attention from the adoring fans who were all too happy to have him be the focus of their attention. Later it was time for guitarist Matt Webb, to take his bow behind the mic.
"Nailed It!"
I left the part, a little early, as the fake snow floated around the stage. Leaving everyone to have one of the best nights of their lives. “It was one of the best shows I’ve been to”, which was relayed to me by someone who was also there. I don’t doubt it. While admittedly I haven’t listened to the band since I was a teenager, I could concur with that statement. And I can only imaging what it would’ve felt if they were one of my favourites. And it’s always a little more special when it’s a hometown band.
