TURN IT UP TUESDAY: HEARTLESS BASTARDS

On November 21, 2009, I photographed my second ever concert. I asked my editor if I could shoot the headliner, Wolfmother. He said he’d put in the request. He asked me if I could shoot the opener as well if approved. I said “of course”. I was willing to shoot whatever at that point. Little did I know that along with the pictures I took, I’d be leaving with a CD in hand, from a band that would become one of my favourites. The band is the Heartless Bastards, the album (the one that hooked me) The Mountain.

A little behind the scenes knowledge for you…

When you photograph a show, depending on where you’re shooting, after you’re done your three songs, you get to stay or are escorted out. Also venue dependant is where you wait for the promoters rep to take you to the stage. Sometimes it’s in the venue, sometimes outside it.

This is important because as I was waiting outside the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, a woman came up to me and asked if I’d like an extra ticket she had, for free. She even said I could sell it if I wanted, because she couldn’t be bothered. As I was a fan of Wolfmother at the time, I said “yes please!”. Not long after, the rep came and brought me in. Now that I had a ticket, I could stay and watch after I was finished shooting.

I took my spot next to the “ticket fairy” and watched the band I’d never heard of before, and had just finished shooting. It didn’t take me long to become hooked to the band up on the stage. In fact, as soon as they were done I went out into the lobby and bought the CD they were on tour promoting, The Mountain.

If you ever have a chance to see them live, take it. You will not be disappointed. If they aren’t in a city near you, this album…and their others will have to hold you over until then.

You don’t always remember when or where you hear a band for the first time. Especially one that will become so ingrained into your life. Luckily I do, like it was yesterday. And I have evidence to prove it.

Wolfmother may have faded into nostalgia for me, but The Heartless Bastards are still here to stay.

What’s your favourite song?

Also, don’t hesitate to add your suggestions.
